I know you have all been waiting to discover what the heck was in the box!

And it is easy.  Check after the jump!

My own personal wine grape vine.

Why? Well, in my quest to understanding wine from the ground up, I decided that could really only be achieved by making wine. Which I have done. So now I need to get more in depth. I have decided to skip over the part where I buy grapes to crush myself and move straight on to the growing the vine.

It seems to me if you want to keep your wine completely local, you have to grow your own grapes. Which should make this an adventure on many levels. First, the USDA zone map for this vine indicates that it should be grown in Zone 6 and I live in Zone 5. So, automatically, I am pushing my luck. But I have a couple of ideas about how to make this work. Second, I have never grown grapes before, so I am not sure if the fruit will be any good. Third, I ordered this vine online so I am not even sure that it will sprout. Please cross your fingers. Fourth, I am not sure how many grapes this vine could potentially produce. Will there even enough to make a single bottle of wine? Sigh.

As for the vine itself. I purchased it from Wayside Gardens.

And it is a Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winner will be notified by email!
