Minnesota, L’Étoile du Nord, home of the Golden Gophers…. Also home to my childhood friend, Jim Geckler and his dearly beloved, Peter. I am looking forward to stopping in this state!

There are a ton of things to stop and do along the road here, not the least of which is a stop over night at Bunbury Farm.

Because I-90 and I-94 run through the state, I have the opportunity to drive through twice.

I am tempted to try to stop in Brainerd, MN as a salute to the movie, Fargo.  It is a little out of the way and I doubt that I would recognize the stretch of road where Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare shoot the state trooper as I will be driving through in June not to mention there would be no Marge Gunderson.  At least I know I will make it to Fargo when I cross into North Dakota.  The area is also home to Paul Bunyan, so I am bound to find some lovely Paul/Babe The Big Blue Ox stuff along the road.

On the return, trip there is an opportunity to visit petroglyphs (rocks AND archaeology, a winning combo for this nerdy girl), an indian mission AND another Laura Ingalls Wilder site.

And naturally, I will be looking to stop at wineries. Once again, suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Contact me here!

Gretchen – I am so excited to hear you will be exploring Minnesota and all it has to offer, which of course includes award-winning wines! You should stop at Saint Croix Vineyards in Stillwater, MN (6428 Manning Ave N), it’s an award-winning winery (Int’l Eastern, SF Int’l Eastern, Indie Int’l, etc.) nestled in a rustic, century-old barn.

Stillwater itself is a great place to visit, it’s a historic, quaint little town on the St. Croix river, and is only about a 25 minute drive from the Twin Cities, with lots of shops, antiques and fabulous wine bars (and provides the perfect environment for a leisurely stroll in the afternoon down by the river). You can spend a day in Stillwater and then stop in to the winery on your way back to the Cities for a complementary tasting. Ask for Amy (me) and we can stroll through the vineyard, talk about MN grapes, and walk through the winery.

Other great recommendations for the Twin Cities include: Domacin Wine Bar in Stillwater (on S. 2nd St.), Spill the Wine (voted #1 Wine Bar and #1 Wine List in the Twin Cities) on 11th and Washington in Minneapolis, as well as Stub n’ Herbs (on Washington and Oak), a famous little pub a block down from the new Golden Gopher stadium that features microbrews from across the country. (Also, order the Bleu Cheese burger, it’s phenomenal!)

Please don’t hesitate to email me, I would love to give you more recommendations! I’ll even point you in the direction of more wineries that are a MUST.

Damn, very nice website. I actually came across this on Google, and I am stoked I did. I will definately be returning here more often. Wish I could add to the post and bring a bit more to the table, but am just absorbing as much info as I can at the moment.

    Thank You
